Did you know that Crescent Island on lake Naivasha, Kenya is both an Island and a Peninsula?

As the sun began to set over Lake Naivasha, painting the sky with hues of orange and pink, I took a moment to reflect on a day filled with wonder and discovery. Leaving Crescent Island, I felt a deep sense of satisfaction, knowing that this small piece of paradise had offered so much more than I had anticipated.

Our adventure began after a thrilling exploration of Hell’s Gate. The contrast between the rugged landscapes of Hell’s Gate and the serene beauty of Lake Naivasha was striking. Arriving at the lake, we were greeted by a scene straight out of a nature documentary: zebras grazing near the water’s edge and monkeys playfully leaping through the trees. It was a delightful start to what promised to be an unforgettable experience.

Our journey began with a boat ride across Lake Naivasha, a lake steeped in history and surrounded by legends. As we glided over the calm waters, it was hard to believe that this serene expanse was once part of a much larger lake that included Lake Nakuru and Lake Elementaita. Over 10,000 years ago, these three lakes were one, a massive body of water that dominated the Great Rift Valley. But as time passed and the waters receded, they separated, leaving behind the distinct lakes we see today. It’s incredible to think about the forces of nature that shaped this landscape, creating such a rich and diverse environment.

Our destination was Crescent Island, a remarkable place known for its crescent-shaped form and intriguing history. This island, which is both an island and a peninsula depending on the season, is the rim of an ancient volcano partially submerged underwater. It gained international fame after being featured in the 1985 film “Out of Africa.” Its sweeping landscapes made it the perfect backdrop, and animals like wildebeests were brought across the land bridge to enhance the scenery. In 1988, rising water levels submerged the land bridge, turning Crescent into an island for the first time and isolating the animals that had been introduced for the film.

Six years later, the water levels receded, and the land bridge reappeared, once again connecting Crescent Island to the mainland. This allowed animals to move freely between the two, highlighting the island’s ever-changing nature. The land bridge remained exposed until April 2020, when Lake Naivasha’s rising waters submerged it again, making Crescent Island inaccessible by foot.

Exploring Crescent Island on foot was a highlight of the day. With no large predators around, it was perfectly safe to wander among the wildlife. We came across giraffes reaching for the highest branches, antelopes grazing peacefully, and zebras moving gracefully across the open plains. The island is also a haven for bird watchers, with a variety of species like fish eagles, pelicans, and cormorants adding to the vibrant atmosphere.

Our activities on the island were diverse. We enjoyed leisurely walks, taking in the stunning views and getting close to the animals. The boat rides offered a different perspective of the lake and its surroundings, enhancing our appreciation of this beautiful area.

As our boat returned to the mainland and we prepared to leave, I felt a deep sense of contentment. The day had been a perfect mix of adventure and relaxation, and I was grateful for the opportunity to experience such a special place.
