UWEC Releases 114 Animals into Murchison Falls Conservation Area
In efforts to boost biodiversity and restore ecological balance, 114 animals have been reintroduced into the Murchison Falls Conservation Area. This ambitious project led by Dr Victor Musiime, a Veterinary Officer at UWEC, marks a significant step toward revitalizing the delicate ecosystem of this renowned wildlife sanctuary in Uganda.
Among the animals released, included a significant number of 5 Gabon vipers, 11 bell-hinged tortoises, 16 marsh terrapins, 4 Egyptian Cobras, 4 genet cats, 3 African Rock Pythons, and a solitary Puff Adder. Reason for choosing Murchison falls is because it has several ecosystems that can sustain a variety of species and it has known populations of some of these species.
Reintroducing these animals to the Murchison Falls Conservation Area demonstrates a commitment to conservation, aiming to protect biodiversity and preserve natural heritage for future generations. The release of these animals is part of UWEC’s conservation efforts to protect and preserve Uganda’s wildlife. The centre is committed to providing a safe haven for animals and promoting biodiversity in the country
As these animals adapt and thrive in their native habitat, their presence is a reminder of the importance of protecting and nurturing the natural world. Through collective action and determination, we can ensure that the wilderness of Murchison Falls continues to flourish, providing a sanctuary for all its inhabitants.
